I recently attended a webinar about creating and showcasing your portfolio. From this webinar and career event, I was able to learn how to create a personal brand. What I learned from this workshop is that it’s really important to showcase a professional and minimalistic website that presents how I would fit in with the company that I am applying for. After attending this webinar, I am more aware of how my work, and especially my portfolio, could be improved from being playful to instead showcasing a more elegant and sophisticated side. I also realized that my portfolio should be displaying my best work and that it should be a place where I display only my favorite achievements. Similar to having a wall with my favorite posters, I will now work on improving my portfolio to the point that I only display what I am the most proud of based on the feedback that I learned from the webinar. I am thankful for the opportunity to have learned from Gina Greco, who is Portfolio MasterClass’ Executive Director. From this class, I understood the importance of personal branding in my career journey. I learned that the work that I produce is a direct reflection of who I am and what I value. I will take these design and marketing skills learned in class with me beyond graduation, and I will continue to implement them as I move forward in my career journey. During the event, I was very interested in listening to what Gina had to say about personal branding and creating the portfolio. She had a lot of insightful advice on how to choose your best work, and only showcase work that you are proud to display. I realize the importance of distinguishing your portfolio from other people’s portfolios. I am also grateful to have learned that the portfolio that you apply for should be aligned with the company’s values, so that employers can rest assured that you are the best fit for the role. Specifically, one of the biggest takeaways that I will continue to take with me after taking this class, is the importance of doing work to the best of your ability. I realized that if you give 100% to everything that you do, and you focus on doing a couple of things well and to the best that you can, it’s more sustainable and you can do more throughout your career journey while still creating and showcasing work that you consider a success.
